Carli V. Lowe’s poem and images revolve around the 1935 “La Torre,” the San José State College yearbook. Lowe is an archivist and a short story writer. After participation in a poetry workshop connected to her curatorship of a recent exhibit, she reflected on the yearbook photos and their history. Her responses led to the poem here, musings on the Black students who appeared in the yearbook with the caption “Dark Rhythm.” The two photographs are here and here.
